Aquaponics Update – June 2014
There’s definitely a lot going on with the aquaponics system, but it’s a lot of trial & error. Farmer John is still trying to figure out what works best. Meanwhile, the tilapia are growing rather quickly.

The most exciting thing happened this month. We got our tilapia! Fifty of them. Farmer John also worked on getting the plumbing & heating all figured out.
The excitement this month in our world of aquaponics was plumbing. Farmer John installed the plumbing hardware for one garden bed, fish tank & sump tank. He’s still working on getting the ph & bacteria levels correct before adding fish.
Slowly, but surely we are getting the greenhouse & aquaponics system ready. Many exciting things happened in March. The grow beds are all in place & the greenhouse is pretty much done.
One of the first things we needed to do to get our aquaponics system running was get the water correctly balanced. To do this I brought home goldfish & minnows and put them in an old 50 gallon aquarium we had. It can take up to 8 weeks to get the bacteria in your water …
We are trying something new this year – Aquaponics. It seems like such a great way to grow food. Not only do we get to grow veggies, but also fish!
