Birds of 2013: Week 41

I’m determined to hit my goal of identifying 100 birds this year. But, it is getting difficult. I’ve gone out looking a few times in the last couple weeks & seen very few, if any, new birds. I’m sure I’ve walked past, even taken pics, of birds I haven’t counted. But so many birds look similar, sometimes I don’t recognize they aren’t the same. This is a learning experience for me.

Here’s a few pics from my walk at a wetlands area last week.

Black-capped Chickadee

It was a beautiful day, even with a few rain cloud above.

Mostly Mallards & a Double-crested Cormorant

Double-crested Cormorants, 2 Mallards & a rodent called a nutria.

Birds of 2013: Week 23

One day the kids & I went to a wetlands area & spotted a Killdeer nest with eggs. We found it most peculiar that they would lay eggs right in the middle of a path, but apparently that’s normal for them.

We also saw a killdeer that day taking a bath.

No new birds to report this week. But, at least the year is half over & I’m over half way to my goal.

Birds of 2013: Week 21

I went to a Wetlands area one day & saw so many great things that the next day I went back & brought my boys with me. Here’s just a smattering of birds we saw over those two days.

Cedar Waxwing
I these birds. I think they’re gorgeous.

Tree Swallow

Belted Kingfisher
Horrible photo, but this is the first time I have ever seen a kingfisher.

Gadwall

Brown-headed Cowbird

Cinnamon Teal

Osprey & its nest

Blue Heron & a Mallard mama with her babies

5 Great Egrets flying in

I’m not positive, but I think this is a bald eagle in its 3rd year.

I love that the spring weather here has been nice enough to go on a few bird walks. My species goal for the year is now 70% complete.

Birds of 2013: Week 3

These birds are from a wetlands area. I saw many of the same birds I’ve already recorded & was thrilled to find a few new species.
